Monroe County is located in south central Iowa. It is named for James Monroe, fifth president of the United States.
The seat and the largest city are both Albia.
Main highways through the county include US-34, IA-5 and IA-137.
The county borders Marion, Mahaska, Wapello, Appanoose and Lucas Counties.
